Barry Unusual Behaviour

The Frontier Middle School shooting occurred on February 2, 1996 in Moses Lake, Washington. The gunman, 14-year-old Barry Dale Loukaitis killed his algebra teacher and two students, and held his classmates hostage for 10 minutes before a gym coach subdued Barry. On the day of the shooting, Barry was dressed as a wild west-style gunslinger. He was armed with a .30–30 caliber hunting rifle and two handguns that belonged to his father, and was carrying approximately 78 rounds of ammunition. Barry walked from his house to his school, where he had entered his algebra classroom during fifth period. He opened fire at students, killing two and wounding another. He then fatally shot his algebra teacher Leona Caires in the chest. Barry said, “This sure beats algebra, doesn’t it?”, a quote from the Stephen King novel Rage. Hearing the gunshots, gym coach Jon Lane entered the classroom. Barry held his classmates hostage, and planned to use one hostage to exit the school. Jon volunteered as the hostage then grabbed the weapon from Barry and wrestled him to the ground, and assisted the evacuation of students. Jon  kept Barry subdued until police arrived at the scene. Watch children who kill

The Loukaitis family demonstrated decidedly dysfunctional issues. Barry suffered from hyperactivity, clinical depression and was taking Ritalin at the time of the shooting. Barry’s parents separated in 1995, after his mother, Jo Ann Phillips, discovered her husband was having an affair. She was a domineering woman who often spoke of suicide, implying that Barry would also have to kill himself. The double-suicide was to be Valentine’s Day of 1996. Barry suffered severe bullying: he complained of being beaten, teased and harrassed by other students. Barry claimed that he only intended on killing Manuel, and that the other deaths were accidental. Manuel taunted and humiliated Barry who claimed he wanted to enact revenge on Manuel for calling him a “fag” a few days earlier. His deteriorating mental health and victimization caused Barry to carry out his actions. Watch school shootings 1
